On 18 April this year, Malcolm Turnbull announced that the 457 Temporary Skilled Visa would be abolished and replaced by a new TSS Visa from March 2018. He also announced wide-ranging reforms to the requirements for Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) and Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) permanent employer sponsored visas from March 2018.

Australian Industry: Skills Need ‘Urgent Attention’

The Australian Industry Group represents 60,000 businesses with 1 million employees and its CEO says access to skills is reaching crisis point.

AI Group CEO, Innes Willox, said recently: “We are going to run off the cliff very soon when it comes to skills and skills development. And that gets down to the basics of reading, writing and mathematics, as well as the development of STEM and STEAM skills.”

'A Great Victory' - Australian Citizenship Changes Blocked by Senate

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton’s proposed changes to the citizenship programme were rejected by the Senate this week.

Mr Dutton planned to impose an Australian values test, tough English language testing and a 4-year waiting period for permanent residents wishing to become Australian citizens.

These proposals were controversial from the outset - both politically, with Labor, the Greens and the Nick Xenophon team voicing strong opposition, and with thousands of migrants who hoped to become Australian citizens.
