Great news for parents looking to be reunited with their children or grandchildren in Australia - a new 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa will be open for sponsorship applications from 17 April 2019.
How can you apply for the 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa and what are the benefits? Let’s find out more…
Why was the 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa introduced?
Immigration Minister David Coleman said this new temporary Parent Visa was introduced in response to community concerns about the limited number of Parent Visa places in Australia’s migration programme and lengthy waiting periods.
Once a sponsorship application has been approved, a sponsored parent will be able to apply for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa and applications are intended to open from 1 July 2019
This visa has been under discussion for a lengthy period and it's heartening to hear that it's finally been passed through parliament.

You must have sufficient funds to support yourself, obtain health insurance and meet character requirements.
Benefits of the new 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa
This visa allows parents to stay in Australia for a longer time period - up to 5 years - before departing. It’s offers a viable alternative to Visitor Visas and permanent Australian Parent Visas.
The new 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa provides a pathway for existing Parent Visa applicants to live in Australia temporarily and spend time with their children and grandchildren while their permanent Parent Visa application is being processed.
Unlike Australia’s other permanent Parent Visas, this new 870 Visa doesn’t ask applicants to pass a ‘balance of family’ test, which means that the parent doesn’t need to have more than half of their children permanently residing in Australia.
Parents on this visa can stay in Australia on a temporary basis for up to 5 years. However, there’s also the option to apply for a second visa after a short period outside Australia, meaning parents and grandparents could spend up to 10 years in Australia.
How many places are available?
Up to 15,000 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visas can be granted during each programme year, from 1 July to 30 June.
The Government says this 15,000 cap has been set in recognition of the challenges of Australia’s ageing population and the overall budget impact of older migrants. It says the cap also reflects its priority of providing visa pathways for children and partners of Australians, as well as the need to target young skilled migrants to maximise the economic benefits of migration.
