Since Australian citizenship was first introduced in 1949, more than 5 million people have become citizens. Indeed, the appeal of Australian citizenship shows no sign of abating, with 133,126 people from at least 190 different countries opting to become Australian citizens in 2015-16 alone.

The majority of recent new citizens came from the UK and India, with the Philippines and China following closely behind.
